The Great Wave Wall was created by Lutz Haufschild, and alludes to one of the major factors contributing to Vancouver's uniqueness - the ocean. Inspired by the "Great Wave of Kanagawa" by the artist Hokusai, light and glass is transformed to an exquisite lyrical oceanic realm. The art glass also creates an appropriate ambiance for Bill Reid's masterpiece, the bronze sculpture The Spirit of the Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe.
Thousands of pieces of glass with partially roughened edges are stacked so that their diverse and radiant edges can take full advantage of any and all light, making the art glass appear in a sensuous luminosity. A protective sheet of non-glare float glass completes the work that measures 40 meters wide by 10 meters high (130 feet by 32 feet).
Ever changing with the light, and the seasons, as well as one's viewpoint, the art glass will always be dynamic and enchanting. The Great Wave Wall will leave a vivid impression on visitors to our city.
